Exposure and response prevention
What is exposure and response prevention (erp)?
ERP is a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) developed specifically to treat OCD. It involves two core components:
- Exposure: Gradually and intentionally approaching thoughts, situations, sensations, images, or experiences that trigger anxiety or discomfort.
- Response Prevention: Learning to resist compulsions, reassurance-seeking, avoidance, checking, or other behaviors you typically use to reduce that discomfort.
With practice, you learn that anxiety and uncertainty can be tolerated without performing a compulsion. Rather than continuing to reinforce the OCD cycle, you develop greater flexibility and confidence in how you respond to difficult thoughts and feelings.
how erp helps break the ocd cycle
OCD often creates a cycle:
Intrusive thought or trigger → anxiety or distress → compulsion or avoidance → temporary relief → stronger OCD cycle
Compulsions can provide short-term relief, but they can also reinforce the idea that the thought, feeling, or situation is dangerous and that you need to perform a behavior to feel safe.
ERP helps interrupt this cycle.
Instead of responding to an intrusive thought by checking, avoiding, seeking reassurance, mentally reviewing, or performing another compulsion, you gradually practice allowing the uncertainty and discomfort to be present without engaging in the compulsive response.
Over time, this can help reduce OCD’s influence and increase your ability to live according to your values rather than your fears.
Compassionate and culturally Affirming OCD Care
ERP can be challenging, and effective treatment requires trust between you and your therapist. At Healing Hearts Wellness, we strive to provide care that respects your identity, culture, values, and lived experiences.
We understand that OCD does not exist in a vacuum. Your experiences with family, culture, religion, race, gender, sexuality, relationships, and other aspects of your identity can influence how OCD symptoms show up and how treatment feels.
Our goal is to provide ERP in a way that is collaborative, culturally responsive, and respectful of your individual experience.
